Graduate Program

Materials science and engineering graduate students come from a broad range backgrounds, integrating ideas across science and engineering to advance innovative materials. The curriculum focuses on the core relationships between structure, properties, processing, and performance, bridging traditional disciplines. We offer both Master of Science and Ph.D. degrees in Materials Science and Engineering.

Program Goals:

  • Provide students with interdisciplinary education and training in emerging areas of materials science and engineering.
  • Place students in interdisciplinary groups performing rigorous and challenging research to prepare them for careers in industrial research teams, national labs, and academic positions.
  • Prepare students to be effective managers in technology industries and to pursue professional development pathways available to them at the UA such as: entrepreneurship, professoriate, or operations management.

Undergraduate Minor

A materials science minor equips students with a crucial understanding of how materials behave, enabling innovation in fields ranging from engineering and manufacturing to healthcare and technology. By learning how structure, processing, and properties are connected, students gain practical insight into designing better products, improving performance, and solving real world challenges. This skillset is highly valued by employers, as it bridges theory and application which prepares graduates to innovate, adapt, and excel in an increasingly materials driven world.

Our materials science minor introduces undergraduate students at the University of Arkansas to the fundamentals while integrating seamlessly with a wide range of degree programs. The minor is highly recommended for engineering, physics and chemistry majors with others also welcome to participate. Grounded in core principles, the minor also offers a unique, hands-on opportunity to gain practical experience in a cleanroom environment.
